LAS VEGAS – Dec. 5, 2023 - Greenberg Traurig, LLP Shareholders G. Michelle Ferreira, Scott E. Fink, and Barbara T. Kaplan will speak at the American Bar Association (ABA) Criminal Tax Fraud & Tax Controversy 2023 program in Las Vegas Dec. 7 – 9.
On Dec. 7, Ferreira will speak as a part of a civil workshop titled “Nuts and Bolts of Tax Controversy Practice” which will cover in-depth litigation strategies for Tax Court cases, including evidence practice, discovery, witness and expert preparation, motions practices and post-trial briefs.
On Dec. 8, Kaplan will participate in a panel titled “Civil Enforcements Priorities,” discussing IRS and Department of Justice issues currently faced in tax enforcement. Also on Dec. 8, Fink will speak on a panel titled “Changing the Rules, We Thought We Knew: From Tax Court Jurisdiction Through Penalty Determinations” discussing the current state of tax controversy practice and its evolving standards.
Ferreira is senior vice president and co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices. She counsels individuals, partnerships, estates, and corporations in tax disputes with the IRS and state and local tax agencies, including the California Franchise Tax Board, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, the Employment Development Department, and county assessment appeals boards. As a former tax litigator for the IRS, Ferreira brings unique experience to clients who have complex and sensitive tax and penalty disputes. She represents clients before the IRS, and state and local tax agencies at the audit, collection, appeals, and litigation stages.
Fink focuses on civil and criminal federal and state tax controversies and litigation. He represents corporations, partnerships, estates and individuals before the IRS, and state and local tax authorities in examinations, collection problems, administrative appeals, and in court.
Kaplan, named “Lawyer of the Year,” Litigation and Controversy –Tax, New York City, 2020 by Best Lawyers in America and named to the “Top 50 Women Lawyers in New York City” list by Super Lawyers magazine, focuses her tax litigation practice on domestic and foreign corporations, partnerships, and individuals in federal, state, and local tax examinations, controversies, and litigation, including administrative and grand jury criminal tax investigations.
