Community service initiative will support various local nonprofit charitable organizations
MIAMI – (April 4, 2014) – The Miami office of international law firm Greenberg Traurig is rolling up its sleeves and giving back to Miami-Dade County charities with the second-annual “GT Cares” community service initiative. During two action-packed weekends between April 5 and April 12, teams of Greenberg Traurig attorneys and business staff members will donate funds, supplies, and manpower for a series of volunteer opportunities benefitting local philanthropic causes, including: His House Children’s Home in partnership with Voices For Children Foundation; Honey Shine; Children’s Home Society of Florida; and Habitat for Humanity.
The Greenberg Traurig volunteer teams for every activity will be led by a “GT Hero” – an attorney who serves as a board member of the nonprofit sponsor organization. In addition to the projects and causes listed below, the teams will raise money throughout the week for Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The teams will engage in the following volunteer projects:
- Saturday, April 5: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. A group of 15 volunteers, led by GT Hero Simone Boayue-Gumbs, a Shareholder in the Financial Institutions Practice Group, will participate in a cottage makeover at His House Children’s Home in partnership with Voices For Children Foundation. The volunteers will clean and give a “facelift” to the children’s bedrooms and the kitchen, plus help to organize the cottage. All furniture, decorations, bedding and other items will be supplied by Greenberg Traurig. His House Children’s Home provides residential care for children in crisis. Voices for Children Foundation works to ensure all foster children have Guardians ad Litem to serve as their voices in the dependency system. Boayue-Gumbs is a board member of Voices for Children.
- Saturday, April 5: 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. GT Hero Sabrina Ferris, Shareholder in the Litigation Practice Group and Co-Hiring Shareholder for the Miami office, and a group of 15 volunteers will join the girls served by Tracy Mourning’s Honey Shine organization to help create decorations for the Honey Shine Mentoring Program’s signature “Hats Off Luncheon” event at the Overtown Youth Center. Supplies and lunch will be provided by Greenberg Traurig. Honey Shine is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and empowering girls between eight and 18 years of age by providing educational experiences and life-skills lessons related to health, nutrition and drug education, as well as career mapping and education. All landscaping supplies and plants will be supplied by Greenberg Traurig with the goal of beautifying and enriching the emergency shelter for children. The Children’s Home Society of Florida works to break the cycle of abuse, heal children in crisis, and create healthy families by placing children for adoption. The McLamore Children’s Center provides emergency shelter in a safe, child-friendly and family-friendly environment for children up to 11 years of age. Garno is a board member of Children’s Home Society.
