SALT LAKE CITY – June 17, 2022 – Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP hosted a welcome reception June 8 celebrating the expansion of its Salt Lake City office. More than 80 local business and community leaders and Greenberg Traurig attorneys and business staff enjoyed an evening of networking in a historic downtown venue that once hosted prize fights. The attendees included representatives from the Utah Black Chamber; the World Trade Association of Utah; BoomStartup, a small business accelerator; and KUER, Utah’s National Public Radio affiliate.
“We want to be a part of Salt Lake City, and we want Salt Lake City to be a part of us. When Greenberg Traurig enters a market, our focus is on establishing local roots in the community and offering clients the benefit of a law firm with a global reach,” said Brian L. Duffy, chief executive officer of Greenberg Traurig. “By design, we have offices in the 30 largest financial centers in the world, ensuring we can meet the needs of our Salt Lake City clients by tapping into our firm’s global resources. We can handle work that is local, national, and international. That’s part of our commitment to our clients.”
As part of the firm’s pledge to establish roots in Utah, Greenberg Traurig has donated funding for scholarships to support tuition and mentorship activities targeting disadvantaged students at both the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law and Brigham Young University’s (BYU) J. Reuben Clark Law School through the Achievement Fellowships Program. The Salt Lake City office is hosting three BYU law students as part of its annual Summer Associate Program.
“Our investment is a recognition of the talent that’s in this market and the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in the Salt Lake Valley,” said Annette Jarvis, co-managing shareholder of the Salt Lake City office. “With the opening of our office in Salt Lake, we are dedicated to giving back to the community, which is a core value of our firm and a commitment we make in every market where we have an office.”
Founding a new office at the start of the pandemic in 2020 was a challenge senior leadership at the firm met head-on. As restrictions lifted, the first Salt Lake City attorneys moved into temporary offices but now have settled into a permanent space on South Main Street. Within two years, the office expanded to include 14 attorneys from various practice areas including Restructuring & Bankruptcy, Banking & Financial Services, Corporate, Intellectual Property & Technology, White Collar Defense & Special Investigations, and Litigation.
“We literally opened this office from our dining room tables,” said Peggy Hunt, co-managing shareholder of the Salt Lake City office, recalling the early days of the pandemic. “Given how dynamic the business community is in Salt Lake, we knew we needed to be here, and our vision is long-term. We plan to continue expanding through strategic lateral hires and building a full range of practices to meet client demand.”
Greenberg Traurig has a well-established history of succeeding in business markets large and small. Founded in Miami in 1967, the firm has expanded with intention, relying on its scalable business model and decentralized structure to bring its culture of collaboration to new cities, opening 33 offices across the United States, plus another 10 internationally. This year the firm has opened offices in Long Island, New York, Portland, Oregon, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
