Clea Bigelow-Nuttall focuses on commercial and investment arbitration. She has particular experience representing clients in the infrastructure, construction, and mining and energy sectors, and has represented private companies, state-owned entities and states in numerous international arbitrations including under the ICC, LCIA, DIAC, HKIAC, SIAC, ICSID, and UNCITRAL Rules.

In addition, Clea has acted as secretary to arbitral tribunals in contractual disputes in the energy and heavy infrastructure sectors, and sits as a board member of the global organization ArbitralWomen. She has practised at the Paris Bar, and is fluent in French and English.

  • Represented a large UK infrastructure company in three consolidated ICC arbitration proceedings pertaining to disputes arising out of the construction of three biomass waste to energy plants in the UK.°
  • Represented a major cruise operator in an LCIA arbitration concerning claims by a dredging contractor in respect of alleged non-payment of works relating to the dredging of a marine reserve island in the Caribbean.°
  • Represented a North African state in respect of parallel contract and treaty arbitrations at the ICC relating to a large infrastructure project in the aftermath of the Arab Spring.°
  • Representing a global industrial gases and engineering company in four parallel high-value HKIAC arbitrations relating to the suspension of gas supply and processing plants in the context of international sanctions. °
  • Representing a South American company in a New York seated ICC arbitration related to claims worth over USD 100 million brought in relation to the construction of offshore regasification and storage structures. °
  • Advising a Middle Eastern state in respect of jurisdictional challenges brought in the UK courts in relation to an international arbitral award. °

  • Represented an AIM listed gold and precious metals mining and exploration company in UNCITRAL arbitration proceedings against the Republic of Uzbekistan for the expropriation of mining and exploration assets. °
  • Represented a Yemeni construction company in two parallel ICC arbitrations against Oman region regarding two major road infrastructure disputes. °
  • Successfully represented the Republic of Albania in an ICSID arbitration brought by a Greek importer of petroleum products under the Energy Charter Treaty and a BIT for the alleged expropriation of a fuel tank farm on the Adriatic coast. °
  • Advising a North American mining investor in ICSID proceedings against a central European state regarding the expropriation of an exploitation license in a major talc deposit. °
  • Representing a Central Asian state in an UNCITRAL arbitration brought by a Canadian uranium mining company under the Energy Charter Treaty in respect of the alleged expropriation of licenses for the exploration and exploitation of a uranium mining area. °
  • Successfully represented a state-owned Scandinavian oil and gas production company in arbitration proceedings brought against a North African state-owned petroleum company in relation to the supply of LNG to the North American market via LNG terminals on the Eastern seaboard. °
  • Representing a major French hotel chain in an ICC arbitration regarding a dispute over international advisory agreements with regard to its hotels in Dubai. °
