Motohiro Matsumura focuses his practice on real estate transactions, real estate and asset-based finance, and regulatory compliance matters relating to the real estate and private equity industries. He regularly counsels both international and domestic private equity funds, asset managers, investors, real estate developers and investment banks and other financial institutions across a full range of transactions, including acquisitions and dispositions, construction and development, joint ventures and investment platforms, complex financings, and fund formation and administration. His experience includes transactions bridging a variety of asset classes from multifamily housing, to office and commercial properties, to hotels and hospitality properties, to logistics facilities and data centers.

In the regulatory space he has particular experience in advising clients navigating the interpretation and practical application of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, the Act on Securitization of Assets (TMK Law), and other related financial regulations crucial in the real estate, financial services and private equity industries.

In addition to real estate finance, he has experience advising on a variety of financing transactions, from traditional corporate finance to cutting-edge and complex structured finance, including syndicated loans, asset-based lending, securitization transactions including self-trusts, loan participations, finance lease transactions and project finance (renewable energy). He also has experience working as an in-house attorney on secondment at a major Japanese domestic bank. Based on such experience, he understands the needs of clients in finding practical and cost-efficient solutions for each transaction.

Motohiro is a licensed Japanese lawyer (bengoshi) who is also fluent in English. He is a key experienced member of the firm’s real estate team focused on cross border international transactions both inbound into Japan and outbound to other major markets around the world.
