Greenberg Traurig Represents Pro Bono a Family in Health Care Case

MEXICO CITY – Dec. 3, 2021 – Attorneys from global law firm Greenberg Traurig, S.C.’s Mexico City office represented the family of a 13-year-old boy with a chronic illness in obtaining access to the COVID- 19 vaccine, as well as necessary CBD to treat the illness. A team led by Litigation Senior Associate Hugo Hernández represents the family pro bono.

The child, who is identified as J.L.S.E., has epileptic seizures caused by a rare disease that affects his immune system. Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine was essential because of his health, but at the time it was not approved for those under the age of 18 in Mexico. Doctors also recommended the use of CBD, which is not regulated in the country, to help reduce the frequency of his seizures.

Greenberg Traurig attorneys secured the vaccine by injunctive relief granted by a federal judge in Mexico, and are working to secure access to CBD.

“The vaccine is essential for my child. The generous assistance from Greenberg Traurig has been key to helping him get access to these treatments that will provide him with tremendous benefits. We are truly grateful,” J.L.S.E.’s father stated in a public interview.

“We are very pleased with the work we’ve been doing for J.L.S.E., even knowing there is a long way to go to secure more long-term and continuous treatment. We will continue helping the family and are hopeful for the future,” Hernández said. “At Greenberg Traurig we are dedicated to pro bono efforts like this because they guarantee human rights and the rule of law, but also play a critical role in preserving and changing people’s lives.”

The Greenberg Traurig team working on this case includes Shareholders Víctor Manuel Frías (Antitrust Litigation & Competition Regulation and Corporate) and Joselino Morales Lopez (Litigation), Associates Hugo Hernández (Litigation), Perla Salgado Román (Litigation) and Miguel Saiz (Corporate and Securities Litigation); and Elba Gutiérrez (practice group attorney and pro bono manager),

Hernández focuses his practice mainly on regulatory law and administrative litigation, with experience focused on the energy, antitrust, finance, infrastructure, tax, telecommunications, consumer protection, and public policy sectors.
