BERLIN – Nov. 11, 2016 – For the third year running, the #medialawcamp took place in Berlin and this time focused on the topic of compliance. Greenberg Traurig organized the barcamp and was one of the main sponsors of the event.
The #medialawcamp started with keynotes from Sofia Halfmann, VP and Head of Compliance Office at DHL, and Alexander Schröder, Chief Risk & Compliance Officer at Axel Springer. In addition to their own understanding of compliance, its possibilities and limitations, they also spoke about the acceptance and perception of the issue amongst management and employees. DHL, for example, distributes car air fresheners with the inscription “no corruption” worldwide. These hang in the cabs of transport vehicles and communicate the rule of compliance internally and externally.
The characteristics of a barcamp are topicality and participants taking an active role. The attendees can suggest topics and help define the content of the program, therefore jointly creating the agenda. The sessions focused on a broad spectrum ranging from IT compliance, to crisis communication, anti-money laundering regulations and liability issues, to insolvency avoidance and compliance from an ethical point of view.
"The challenge of compliance is not only to know what is right, but to create a system that ensures compliance throughout the company," said Viola Bensinger, Partner and Head of the Technology Group at Greenberg Traurig Germany. “The variety of the sessions and the lively discussions showed that we really got to the heart of the topic.”
