BOSTON — July 27, 2017 — Former U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Robert A. Sherman has rejoined Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s Boston office as Senior Counsel. Sherman was previously with the firm from 1999 – 2014 and was a founding member of the Boston office. He will bring more than 30 years of legal and public service experience to provide strategic legal counsel to the firm’s diverse global clientele.
Sherman most recently served as the United States Ambassador to Portugal from 2014 – 2017, having been nominated by President Barack Obama and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate. As Ambassador, he focused heavily on bilateral economic development and international security issues, such as cybersecurity, refugees, narcoterrorism, and NATO. In recognition of his work in the country, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa decorated him with the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator in March 2017.
Prior to his ambassadorship, Sherman was a founding member and former co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Boston office. With wide-ranging trial and regulatory experience, he focused his practice on government and regulatory investigations and litigation, internal corporate investigations - with an emphasis on Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) compliance - as well as consumer protection and class action defense. Sherman has significant experience representing clients in complex, high profile cases including those that have generated significant media attention. He brings a unique perspective and understanding of the global landscape to provide strategic counsel to clients on international issues, particularly in EU countries.
From 1991 – 1993, Sherman was the Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Consumer Protection Division. There, he led the 45-person division which enforces the broad spectrum of laws protecting consumers.
“Bob is a great leader, valued public servant, and the consummate collaborator with his clients. He cares about people; he cares about the community; and he cares about this firm. We are fortunate Bob is returning to his home at Greenberg Traurig,” said Greenberg Traurig’s Chief Executive Officer Brian L. Duffy.
Terence P. McCourt, Managing Shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Boston office, commented, “With a great deal of pleasure and pride, we welcome back Bob Sherman. Bob served as an extraordinary emissary for the United States in his role as Ambassador, and we are thrilled that he has returned to Greenberg Traurig. Our clients will benefit from his leadership, wisdom and guidance, and our Boston office will be stronger than ever.”
