Patrick Owens is a member of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice in Greenberg Traurig’s Chicago office. He is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Patrick focuses his practice on the entire lifecycle of Intellectual Property (“IP”)—from identifying patentable inventions within inventor disclosures, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the USPTO; to conducting IP due diligence in the transactional space; and to protecting IP rights through litigation.
Patrick also relies on his prior industry experience to understand and meet the needs of clients. Prior to entering the legal field Patrick was an experienced mechanical design engineer. Patrick worked within product development teams at OEM and brand-name product manufacturers to bring new products to market. Patrick also provided engineering and manufacturing support to both overseas and domestic suppliers while utilizing principles of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma. Patrick utilizes his industry knowledge to work with inventors and clients to pursue their IP-related goals.

- Represented a power tool manufacturer in successfully asserting the rights of five patents against an infringer of the power tool manufacturer’s patents.
- Represented an automotive manufacturer in defending against accused infringement of six patents owned and asserted by a non-practicing entity.

- Drafted multiple patent applications for clients in consumer goods, manufacturing, medical device, automotive, electrical, computing, and steel processing industries.
- Drafted multiple patent applications and handled multiple patent application and prosecution matters for a client in the field of higher education with a diverse range of subject matters.
- Handles multiple patent application and prosecution matters for a consumer goods manufacturer and retailer.
- Handles multiple patent application and prosecution matters for a client in the financial technologies space.

- Assisted in conducting IP due diligence related to various license, merger, and acquisition related matters, including chain of title searches, ownership searches, prior licensing analyses, etc.
