Greenberg Traurig Attorneys Johnine P. Barnes and Nikki Lewis Simon Speak at Corporate Counsel Women of Color Conference

LAS VEGAS – Sept. 21, 2016 – Johnine P. Barnes and Nikki Lewis Simon, shareholders at global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, are speaking at the Corporate Counsel Women of Color 12th Annual Career Strategies Conference, being held through Sept. 23 in Las Vegas.

During the conference, Barnes, from the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, will speak at the workshop titled “Women of Color and Diversity and Inclusion at Firms and in Corporations: Working Group to Develop Solutions for 2017.” Simon, from the Miami office, will moderate three workshops including, “Luck Be A Lady: How to Bet on Yourself and Win! A Discussion from the CCWC Focus Group Findings” and “Top 5 Proactive Steps Women of Color Can Take to Advance Up the Corporate Ladder.”

Founded in 2004, Corporate Counsel Women of Color provides a support network to over 3,300 in-house women attorneys of color in the United States, as well as Canada, Asia, Africa and Europe.

Barnes’ practice includes litigating and defending administrative claims of harassment, retaliation, and discrimination on the basis of age, race, sex, and disability; wrongful discharge and breach of contract issues; and client compliance with federal and state statutes governing employment, including compliance with federal contracting regulations and the applicable statutory provisions. She also has counseled and represented companies, government agencies, and associations on labor law issues, including the Fair Labor Standards Act, as well as analogous state statutes, collective bargaining, grievance arbitration, and National Labor Relations Board proceedings. Barnes previously served as NBA General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel and Special Counsel to the NBA President. She also received the NBA’s Sadie T.M. Alexander Award in 2014 for her work and promotion of women in the law and the Commercial Law Section Outstanding Counsel of the Year Award in 2013.

Simon serves as the firm’s Director of Client Development and Corporate Social Responsibility. As part of this evolving role, she works to strategically align the firm’s diversity and inclusion programming and initiatives with client needs thereby serving as an integral component of the business development function on a global scale, as well as to expand the current efforts of the firm’s diversity initiatives in collaboration with cross-firm stakeholders, among other endeavors. Previously, for more than 15 years, she primarily represented her cross-industry clients’ business objectives by protecting their capital, whether human, intellectual or financial, against claims of wrongdoing in complex commercial litigation matters that span the full panoply of issues targeting businesses’ corporate character and brand.
