Erick Hernández Gallego Appointed Vice-President of ICC, Mexico Chapter Environment Commission

MEXICO CITY – Feb. 15, 2023 Greenberg Traurig Shareholder Erick Hernández Gallego, head of the firm’s Mexico City Environmental Practice and co-chair of its Energy & Natural Resources Practice in the Mexico City office, was appointed vice-president of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Mexico Chapter’s Environment Commission. Currently, Erick also co-chairs the ICC's Global Circular Economy Working Group.

The objective of the commission is to develop recommendations and tools that seek to address the most pressing environmental issues at the national and international level, including issues focused on climate change, green and circular economy, sustainable development, and the prevention and control of pollution, with the aim of making a significant contribution to the sector. Additionally, the commission will review the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be met in 2023 and the results of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), as well as the Biodiversity COP (Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources).

"I have had the pleasure of knowing Erick since we were students at UNAM Law School. From a young age, Erick always stood out for his energy, dynamism, work capacity and commitment to the environment. Erick is and has been a key player in the environmental and energy sector in Mexico with vast experience in national and international operations with a high degree of sophistication and complexity. Erick currently serves as co-chair of the ICC Global Circular Economy Group, which confirms his commitment to the international environmental agenda. It is a privilege to be able to add Erick to the ICC Environment Commission. I am convinced that his global vision will energize the Commission to be an agent of change in the national and international environmental agenda," said Hector Garza, president of the Environmental Commission of the ICC Mexico.

Erick has over 20 years of experience in environmental and sustainability law. He advises Mexican and international entities on projects related to renewables, environmental impact and risk matters, financing of green projects, soil contamination, as well as emissions reductions and climate change. Over the last year, he has led client representations regarding Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG), Circular Economy and air emission matters, and other issues relating to environmental law. Erick has served as a panelist for events organized by the Environmental Committee of ICC Mexico, International Bar Association, American Bar Association, Abogadas MX (ESG session), the UN COP26 Summit, and webinars organized by Greenberg Traurig, among others, and frequently writes on environmental law topics.

"I am honored that ICC has given me this opportunity to represent the legal considerations for the environmental business sector and incorporate my knowledge for the benefit of the environment. This appointment allows me to continue the efforts I have made in this area over the years, drawing on my experience working with the World Bank and the Ministry of Energy on the possible implementation of carbon capture, use, and storage in Mexico, as well as my experience at the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP26) in Glasgow and at the 17th United Nations Climate Change Conference (CoP17) where I served as a resource on environment and sustainability," Erick said.
